In the heart of Rajasthan, in the small town of Khatu Shyam Ji Temple, lived the eternal legend of Baba Khatu Shyam, worshipped as the God of Kaliyug. His real name was Barbarika, the brave grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha. From childhood, Barbarika was a fearless warrior blessed with unmatched skills in archery.
Pleased by his devotion and penance, Lord Shiva gifted him three divine arrows that could destroy entire armies. Agni Dev also granted him a powerful bow. Barbarika made a vow that he would always fight for the weaker side in any battle.
When the great Mahabharata war was about to begin at Kurukshetra, Barbarika decided to participate. On his way, he met Lord Krishna disguised as a Brahmin. Krishna asked the young warrior about his strength. Barbarika confidently replied that with just one arrow, he could end the entire war.
Realizing the danger of his vow, Krishna understood that Barbarika’s presence could change the destiny of the war endlessly, as he would keep switching sides to protect the weaker army. To preserve dharma, Krishna asked Barbarika for charity — his head. Without hesitation, the noble warrior smiled and offered his head willingly.
Before sacrificing himself, Barbarika requested to witness the entire battle. Krishna placed his head atop a hill, from where he watched the war unfold.
After the victory, Krishna blessed him, saying that in Kaliyug he would be worshipped as Shyam, the one who grants devotion, courage, and hope to millions. Even today, countless devotees visit Khatu seeking Baba Shyam’s blessings with deep faith and love.
